Senior Computational Scientist - Quantitative Predictive Modeling

Requisition Id 4874

Overview:

The Scalable Algorithms and Coupled Physics group is seeking a Senior Computational Scientist in Quantitative Predictive Modeling to lead the Verification, Validation (V&V) and Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) of large-scale multiphysics simulations. Relevant physics include fluid dynamics, fluid structure interaction, solid mechanics, rotor dynamics, thermal modeling, and plasma physics. The group is looking for someone passionate about understanding and improving the predictive capability of both traditional and machine learning-accelerated approaches to modeling these physics. The successful candidate will work with code developers, modelers, and experimentalists in a variety of application areas to build a strong research program in predictive modeling.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate conducts state-of-the-art research and development in computing and computational sciences in support of DOE's missions and programs. We develop and deploy leading edge computing and information technology capabilities to keep computational sciences at a level comparable to experimental sciences in the pursuit of scientific discovery and technical innovation.

Major Duties/
Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with model developers, engineered systems analysts, and experimentalists to understand sensitivities of simulation code implementation choices, model choices, and experimental uncertainties for the purpose of understanding and improving the predictive capability of simulation codes.
  • Engage with the broader VVUQ community to identify and develop accurate, efficient methods for quantifying and optimizing the predictive accuracy of the traditional and ML-accelerated multiphysics simulations used in a variety of use cases, including analysis, design optimization, and inverse modeling.
  • Actively collaborate with domain experts from U.S. government laboratories and academia involved in similar efforts.
  • Interact with sponsors to define, execute, and report on relevant project elements.
  • Publish high quality research results in peer-reviewed open or classified journals and conferences, if so authorized by the sponsoring agency.
  • Develop proposals and work statements for funding, with ability to manage work scope and deliverables to sponsors

Basic
Qualifications:

  • PhD in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field and 7
    years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with the V&V and UQ of large-scale computational models to understand and improve predictive capability.

Preferred
Qualifications:

  • 10
years of relevant professional R&D experience outside of Ph.D.
  • Strong computational skills, including programming in C+
and/or Python and programming for HPC architectures.
  • A proven publication track record.
  • A proven record of successful proposal development.
  • Excellent communication (spoken and written), strategic planning, organization, and decision-making skills.

Special Requirements:

  • It is required of this position the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.

Relocation:
Moving can be overwhelming and expensive. UT-Battelle offers a generous relocation package to ease the transition process. Domestic and international relocation assistance is available for certain positions. If invited to interview, be sure to ask your Recruiter (Talent Acquisition Partner) for details.
